Aranui 5 Day 3 Amanu

Amanu is an atoll in the Tuamotu  Archipelago. It is a small coral island that is unusual because it is a small port located inside the lagoon on the island of Ikitake. Ikitake is 19 km from the main island Hao. It receives no supply shipments and has no airport. Everyone must travel to Hao for supplies, which is a 2 hour boat ride away.

Our arrival was the fourth time ever the island has received a ship. It was an amazing experience. We were greeted by a band on arrival and were given beautiful leis by school children.

Once we were all on shore we were escorted to the town center that was set up for a party. The 18 year old mayor greeted us. The main band played Polynesian music and we were treated to traditional folk dancing by every student in the local school.

The mayor leading the children in a song.

They were joined by some passengers in a dance.

Don’t laugh. She was just too cute to say no to.

Then we had a feast for lunch. The 23 families on the island prepared a Polynesian banquet supplemented by the ship. Amazing meal!

We headed to the beach to snorkel. Unfortunately, not the best. I saw a few clams, and several convict tangs.

We got back to the ship just as the skies opened up.
